LED or solid state lighting (SSL) is the most energy-efficient available, using only 10% of the power of incandescent lights, and 40–75% that of CFLs. Plus, LEDs generate very little heat (unlike incandescent bulbs), which means further savings on cooling costs. LEDs contain no mercury or other toxic materials, and their extremely long life expectancy means less material in our landfills. And LEDs do not give off harmful UV radiation, like traditional lighting. According to the US Department of Energy, solid state lighting technology offers our nation tremendous potential to save energy and enhance the quality of our built environment.
